THE IMPACT OF ACADEMIC STRIKE ON STUDENT MOTIVATION

NEWS

Academic strikes have become a regular issue in Nigeria’s university system. Most of these strikes are organized by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) when lecturers demand better funding, improved welfare, and the implementation of agreements with the government. While these demands may be important, the strikes often affect students the most.

IMPACT

One major effect of academic strikes is the disruption of the academic calendar. When lecturers stop work, lectures, tests, and examinations are suspended. This makes the school calendar unstable and unpredictable. Students who expect to finish a semester within a specific time suddenly have to wait for months before academic activities resume.

A clear example is the 2020 nationwide university strike in Nigeria. The strike began in March 2020 and lasted for about nine months, making it one of the longest strikes in the country’s university system. During this period, many students stayed at home without academic activities until the strike was suspended in December 2020. (Nairametrics)

Because of this long break, many students lost interest in studying. Some students started small businesses or took up temporary jobs to keep themselves busy. Others spent most of their time on social media or entertainment. When schools eventually resumed, it became difficult for many students to return to their academic routine.

Another major impact is the extension of students’ stay in school. A programme that is supposed to last four years may take five years or more because of repeated strikes. This delay affects students’ career plans and personal goals. Some students also feel frustrated because their graduation date keeps changing.

Recently, strike actions continue to remind students of this problem. For example, lecturers at the University of Lagos recently withdrew their services to protest what they described as unpaid or reduced salaries. The industrial action began on March 11, 2026, before it was later suspended after discussions with the university management. (Punch Newspapers). Even though the strike was short, it still created anxiety among students who feared another disruption to their academic activities.

Education experts believe that regular dialogue between the government and academic unions is necessary to prevent frequent strikes. A stable academic calendar will help students remain focused and motivated in their studies.

CONCLUSION

Academic strikes may aim to improve the education system, but their effects on students are serious. Disrupted calendars, long breaks from school, and delayed graduation can weaken students’ motivation and make their academic journey more difficult.
