WHY MANY STUDENTS MEMORISE INSTEAD OF UNDERSTANDING

AN OPINION

Many students today rely heavily on memorisation instead of deep understanding, and this approach is becoming a serious problem in education. In my view, this happens because of pressure to pass exams rather than truly learn. Schools often reward correct answers more than critical thinking, pushing students to cram information temporarily.

However, memorisation alone limits creativity and long-term knowledge. Students who focus only on repetition often struggle to apply what they have learned in real-life situations. Education should shift towards encouraging understanding, discussion, and problem-solving rather than rote learning.
